| Working with equal comfort in watercolor, oil and pastel, upstate New York artist Elizabeth Apgar-Smith has made a substantial mark with her impressionistic landscapes, townscapes, genre interiors, and still lifes. The Schoharie painter has over the years won a host of regional and national competitions with works in each of those three media, and has seen her work published in six separate reference books on technique in watercolor and pastel published by North Light Publishers in this country and Quarto Publishers in London, England, including Capture the Character of your Hometown in Watercolor and Painting the Effects of Weather. Both The Artistís Magazine and American Artist Magazine have profiled Apgar-Smith, a juried member of American Pastel Society, Northeast Watercolor Society, and The Oakroom Artists. At present, the Waterside Gallery in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the Smithy-Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown, NY, and Picture Perfect Art Gallery in Canajoharie, NY carry paintings by the Skidmore College graduate, and she also maintains both a studio and gallery on Main Street in her hometown. Apgar-Smith teaches workshops through the Hudson River Valley Art Workshops in Greenville, NY and the Berkshire Center for the Arts. She also offers a series of studio classes and on-location workshops at her studio each fall and spring in Schoharie. Quotes: "Elizabeth Apgar-Smithís painting style reflects the spontaneous, improvisational brush strokes inherent in a well-executed watercolor." - Art & Antiques Northeast Of her pastels: "Elizabethís unique cross-hatching technique creates elusive images that literally shimmer. The way she guides the viewer through a painting is masterful." - Curator Julia Watkins, Dogtail Gallery (Webetuck, NY) "In her glowing impressionistic style, the artist gives nobility to even commonplace images." - The Daily Mail (Catskill, NY) "Her watercolors and pastels are delightfully moody. Each and every one fresh and original." - William John Aupperlee, The Manchester Journal (Vermont) "A master of technique, [Apgar-Smith] has a very particular style which is extremely attractive and imaginative." - George Silva, the Daily Freeman's Art Beat column (Cooperstown, NY) |
