Cyrena Summers

..............One of my earliest art memories is making tar balls while walking home from Sunday school as a young child.  I was also influenced by the handiwork and paintings I saw being created by female relatives.  As a young student at Boston University I walked the halls of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Gardner Museum, and made friends with students at the Museum School.
Teaching elementary school art for many years helped to give me an enjoyment of using and combining many media.  Many of the materials I use are recycled-throw-a-ways, parts of other things, even parts of other art works.  My work has been seen locally, in other cities, and is in permanent collections.  Installations continue to intrigue me.
My art education includes a Bachelors of Arts degree from Harpur College and a master of social sciences degree from the School of General Studies ("A Resource Guide to Women Artists for Elementary School Teachers,) both at Binghamton University.  Post-graduate courses in painting, sculpture and foundry were also pursued at Binghamton University.  Courses from Syracuse University helped give me a teaching certificate.  I also attended classes at Roberson Clayworks and seminars at Art New England in painting and sculpture.
